Frequently asked questions about CD Production
What is the difference between duplication and replication?
Duplicated discs (often called burned discs) are made by burning tiny holes in the dye layer of a recordable CDR or DVDR. It is the same process as when you burn a disc on your home computer. We use the highest quality CD-Rs on the market to ensure maximum quality and compatibility. This is more cost effective for small runs and takes much less time to produce. There is not really any audible difference between replication and duplication. There might be a small percentage of older CD players or car stereos that is unable to play duplicated CDs. This is rare, but it does occasionally happen.
Replicated discs (often called pressed discs) are made by first creating a glass master, then stampers that make exact clones using high-tech injection-molding. A coat of reflective aluminum is added and finally it gets sealed with a protective coat of lacquer hardened by ultraviolet light. Because of this extensive set up process, it is common to require a minimum of 500 discs for replication.
How and when do I upload my files?
Once you place an order you'll see a link to your account. There you can fill out your track list form, upload your audio and / or graphics files and read further information on file specs and requirements.
How do I create graphics?
There are 3 options:
- Use your own software and our templates
- Use our free online design tool
- Hire one of our professional graphic designers
If you use your own design software or have someone else create your graphics for you, you'll have to download our templates which can be opened in any graphics program. Make sure all of your photos are at least 400dpi. Follow the instructions on the templates regarding bleed and color mode.
Our free online design tool is accesible in your account once you place an order. It will load the appropriate template for your packaging and there are simple instructions and videos to show you how to use it.
Atomic Disc also has a graphic design department with professional designers that can help you create a concept that matches your music, looks professional, and will print beautifully.
What format should my audio be in?
Your files should be .wav, .aif, or .aiff at 44.1kHz and 16 bit, or a production ready DDP.
Any other file types, sample rates or bit depths will be converted without notification.
MP3s are not recommended, but we will accept them. You’ll also need to fill out the CD track form to ensure that your CDs will have the correct track order, spacing, codes...etc.
You can also send us your duplication ready audio CD. We will duplicate exactly what you give us, so make sure you're satisfied with what you send. If you are interested in using our professional mastering services to get the best possible sound quality for your master, we'd be happy to help you.
How much does shipping cost?
We offer free shipping with a lot of our products. You can choose to upgrade to a faster shipping method. Shipping is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. You will always know the shipping price before you purchase.
